Where we live, work, play, and age—and how our society functions—profoundly shapes our health and wellbeing. These influences, known as the determinants of health, are modifiable and can be improved to support healthier lives. The Deakin Advancing Health and Social Justice domain draws on deep expertise in quantitative and qualitative research methods for collaborating with community to understand social, environmental, commercial, and political factors that lie outside traditional health systems, but play a critical role in shaping population health.
About us
The Deakin Advancing Health and Social Justice domain within the Faculty of Health, is a founding member of the Deakin Institute for Health Transformation. Formerly part of Deakin’s Centre for Population Health Research, our team brings a rich and diverse portfolio of research focused on the social, environmental, commercial, and political determinants of health. We are committed to advancing health equity and conducting partnership-driven research that delivers real-world impact.
Drawing on strengths in population-based research, including public health, epidemiology and biostatisitcs, and both etiologic and intervention research, our researchers collaborate with partners to tackle complex, systemic health challenges.

We work closely with a wide range of community groups, advocacy organisations, employers, and government and non-government agencies—including schools, hospitals, police and emergency services, VicHealth, Beyond Blue, Movember, and the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA). Our collaborations also span national and international universities, as well as Local, State, and Federal Government departments and health organisations across sectors.
