Professor Adrian Cameron from the Deakin Centre for Global Preventive Health and Nutrition has been awarded a prestigious Australian Research Council (ARC) Future Fellowship for $1,324,808.

ARC Future Fellowships support outstanding mid-career researchers to undertake high-quality research that delivers national and international benefit. The highly competitive scheme helps researchers pursue innovative projects, build research leadership and create new knowledge with real-world impact.

Professor Cameron’s fellowship will investigate how food retailers can play a more effective role in supporting environmental sustainability. While many retailers have focused on improving operational practices such as transport, refrigeration and waste reduction, the project will explore the broader environmental impacts of the food products sold in stores and the influence of retail marketing on consumer food choices.

By generating new evidence on the relationship between food retail, consumer behaviour and environmental sustainability, the research aims to support changes that benefit both people and the planet.

Professor Cameron said:

“Even though food retailers are very aware that their customers want them to be environmentally sustainable, their response to the challenge is restricted to improvements in operational activities such as refrigeration, transport and waste. They completely overlook the environmental consequences of the foods they sell and the role their marketing plays in shaping the food choices of their customers. The research proposed in this fellowship aims to change that, and I’m extremely grateful for the support of the ARC that will make it happen.”

Professor Cameron is internationally recognised for his research on food retail environments, healthy food policy and obesity prevention. His work has helped build the evidence base needed to create healthier and more sustainable food systems.

The fellowship forms part of a strong outcome for Deakin University, which secured more than $8.5 million in ARC Future Fellowships funding across a range of research areas. The successful projects span fields including health, sustainability, advanced manufacturing and social research, highlighting the breadth and impact of research being undertaken across the University.
